However, the Covid pandemic has highlighted the need for change; we are on the cusp of a renewed focus on the wellbeing of mothers.
WHAT IS MATRESCENCE?
LET ME ASK YOU
Have your priorities, motivations and ambitions changed since becoming a mother?
Are you feeling confused about what you really need and want now in terms of your career?
Do you struggle to recognise yourself now that you are a mum, making you question who you now are?
Do you badly suffer "mum guilt" and regularly find it hard to control your emotions?
Are you completely overwhelmed by "the juggle" and always feel you are only just surviving?
Are you lacking the confidence you once had as a result of societal expectations placed on you, often leaving you feeling "you are not good enough"?

Coined by the anthropologist Dana Raphal, Matrescence is defined as the process of becoming a mother. It's a word used to describe the physical, psychological and emotional changes people go through during the monumental transformation that is motherhood.
Dana Raphael described it as the emergence of a whole new identity.
It is the emergence of a new women through a personal transformation which is all encompassing, beginning with their first pregnancy. Many go as far as saying it's the "birth of the mother" which gives women the opportunity to review their values and belief systems, enabling them to grow and emerge a new, more authentic version of themselves.
Matrescence is not a new term but does not currently exist in mainstream vocabulary. Sadly, very little has been written on the subject. The impact that pregnancy, birth and motherhood have on a woman's identity is still rarely discussed.

In 2008, Dr Aurelie Athan revived the notion that the transition into motherhood is of a similar magnitude to that of teenagers entering adolescence.
It is a biological, psychological, social, political and spiritual transformation which leaves many mothers feeling exhausted, inadequate, devalued and relentlessly pursuing societal expections.
Matrescence is the process that enables women to piece the puzzle together. It is the framework that allows women to better understand themselves and know they are not alone in how they feel. Attachment to our core beliefs about motherhood and what it is to be a woman today, can cause anxiety and resentment in times of significant personal transformation.
We need to restore trust in both ourselves and a process is needed, if the new self is going to emerge strong and radiate success. Ultimately, we must become the best version of ourselves, so we can parent our best.
Self-compassion, an increased self-awareness and a focus on ourselves is needed if we are to be the best mum we can be.

Motherhood is completely undervalued by much of the western world. We need to rewrite the modern day definition of being a woman.
Women need to feel valued both at work and at home, regardless of the employment choices they make.
With so many women now striving for career success whilst also wanting to be the best mum they can be, motherhood burnout is now sadly a reality for so many. This needs to CHANGE.
I believe this change will come and it starts by better supporting mothers.
